Phantom Lady Vs. Easter Bunny

Image
Before Fox Features got the rights to Phantom Lady which brought her to the notice of Dr. Frederic Wertham's anti-comics campaign for constantly getting tied up in a very revealing outfit, this woman of wonder wore a less revealing outfit when she was first created for Quality Comics where she was a backup feature for characters like Plastic Man or The Spirit. Sandra Knight led a double life from being a senator's daughter and a caped crimefighter, even though she rarely wore a mask to hide her identity. One of the few cases that Phantom Lady actually had a mask was in Police Comics #18 when her duds were a light swimsuit and green cape as she fought her first costumed supervillain, the dreaded Easter Bunny! Sandra's father has an Easter Egg hunt at his estate hosted by a fursuiter in an unconvincing bunny outfit who has hidden a gold painted egg for the children to find for the prize of a real rabbit. Sandra yet again had to prove how awesome she was even when she isn'...

Black Cat & Kitten, The Boy Wonder

Image
Most prepubescent boys in the Golden Age were drafted into being the junior partner of a muscular mystery man, but Kit Witson totally lucked out when he got the curvaceous Black Cat as his mentor. In an origin story that copies a certain Boy Wonder a decade after his original premiere, Harvey Comics introduced this sidekick at the tail end of the Black Cat's run. The totally unrelated-Marvel character was in reality Linda Turner, a 40's movie star who did her own stunts, but secretly wore a skimpy black unitard as the heroine Black Cat that went on to fight Nazis, having an extended stint as a masked cowgirl, plus doing several team-ups with other various other heroes in the Harvey Comicsverse. The bright minds at Harvey figured it was a solid plan to have their still successful superhero finally get her own sidekick. Black Cat confronts her latest enemy, the flamboyant Fire Bug dressed in giant insect outfit. that sets fire to a circus where Kit was an acrobat whose parents ar...

Giant Size Vampire-Thing

Image
Charlton Comics had a wide library of horror titles in the early Bronze Age, but Fear-Feeder from Scary Tales #4 has an obvious rip-off of swamp monster characters like Swamp Thing or Man-Thing. Instead of the creature being identified as another standard mossman, the bayou beast is labeled as a "vampire". Most times your average Nosferatu is a living dead bloodsucker that sometimes displays batlike characteristics, but this dark dweller is covered with pond scum and lives of its victims' fear-induced empathy. Most supernatural cryptids aren't referred to as a vampire that munches up the bad vibes of craven mortals. In the story, a pair of hick brothers decide to get lucky at the local saloon and leave their nearly comatose grandma alone for the evening at their rickety shack, although they are shocked to death when they witness the Fear-Feeder popping its head out of the dark causing them to crash their jeep and die. The walking salad is now hungry as he can't ge...

Captain Lazy Jr.

Image
Freddy Freeman was given a serious boost when after the death of his father by the aptly named Captain Nazi, Billy Batson shared his powers of Shazam with him to transform into Captain Marvel. Even though both boys were about the same age Freddy was still given the additional name of Junior. Freddy battled the Axis Powers overseas during WWII, which is quite a feat considering he has a permanently broken leg in his secret identity, but most of his adventures had calmed down by 1952 to the point where Captain Marvel Jr. skips his superhero duties to spend the day just chilling out. In this issue from 1952, Freddy was now living in a boarding house run by kindly old Mrs. Wagner, along with the token brilliant scientist who happened to hang out with young boys, Professor Edgewise. CMJ starts off in the morning flying to save an observatory from being destroyed by an earthquake then heads back home to take a nap in a hammock, even though he is supposed to be gifted with the stamina of Atla...
