Rulah, The Fearless Giraffe Slayer
Rulah was probably the most recognized of Fox Features' lineup of jungle girls, mostly because of her wardrobe. Whereas most comic book jiggling jungle juggernauts would dawn the skins of large cats like tigers or cheetahs, Rulah went a step further. First premiering in the abnormally titled series of Zoot which first featured nothing but talking animals and cartoon frolics, the seventh issue switched gears for more action-driven adventures with the debut of Rulah. Jane Dodge was just an average rich orphan flying her plane over the African jungle, but because she was too plastered to pay attention to her fuel line, she crashed landed after parachuting with her clothes on fire. When she sobers up, she discovers the corpse of a poor giraffe that was killed in the crash, so Jane just ripped the flesh off the majestic creature and made herself a scantily ensemble with some parachute scraps. After she completes her spotty new outfit, Jane boots out an evil white lady named Nurla which a tribe of Africans had mistaken as their moon goddess because she was causasian. Jane now takes Nurla's place as the resident white savior after stabbing a poor hungry leopard to death and declared the new ruler of the jungle with the aptronym Rulah. During her two-year run, Rulah survived her role of troubleshooter via some grappling and wrestling she picked up along the way, plus she learned how to use some "jungle magic" while being accompanied by her own pet panther sidekick called Saber. Rulah might've been just another drunk driver, but she managed to dig out a decent living as a jungle goddess just because she landed on an unlucky giraffe and horked its hide.
