Landor: The Fresh Monster Maker

Famed Sheena artist Bob Powell used the pseudonym Gregory Torey when he created the character of Landor, Maker Of Monsters. It was originally intended be just a filler in the first issue of Harvey Publications' Speed Comics but went on to have it be a regular feature in the first 11 issues, although each one was short around 4-pages long. Landor was one of the first genuine supervillains to get his own segment in a major comics anthology and not a regular foil for a reoccurring costumed hero. Landor is a generic mad scientist who creates a new monster for each issue, and lather, rinse, repeat. Some have seen him as a ripoff of Dr. Frankenstein, but he evolved into being a hideously deformed figure after surviving a fire and now sporting wearing a reaper robe. Most of Landor's experiments were foiled by the generic adventurer duo of Anthony Torrence and his perpetually single fiance Marcia, occasionally with Anthony's old school chum Kung Fu-Tse who was also a criminal expert. Landor would send out monsters to kill his enemies like a harpy or a giant mosquito, but he seemingly turns over a new leaf when he goes to the US military to help them defeat a gang of armor-wearing terrorists with ray guns by creating a huge robot which of course goes crazy and nearly kills Landor only to have Anthony save him. The scarred scientist goes back his old ways when he creates a 12-foot mole for some hoods to break into a bank, but when this fails Landor makes a cat-sized cat woman to kidnap Anthony's niece Gloria that also bungles. Landor then gets help from female surgeon Sina Zurat who wants to join in his monster making, and they fall in love only for their fanged monster girl Creeta to get jealous and kill Sina. Landor tries other schemes like framing Anthony or sending other deformed beasties after him but never succeeds. Ultimately, Landor never got his revenge against his enemies and just wandered off into obscurity with all the other forgotten villains, however the maker of monsters was the prototype for future disfigured evil scientists, so Landor is pretty much laid the ground for Doctor Doom to absolutely revel in.
